About the Founder
Hi, I’m Dr. Micah McCrary-Dennis, Founder and CEO of MentorSchip, Inc. I founded this 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to motivate students to pursue higher education with a debt-free mindset. After 3 degrees and a decade of college, I graduate at the top of my class but felt like I was starting off real life at the bottom. Having the weight of debt looming over me every month after the deferment period ended was an incredible burden. After a bit of research, I found out that students primarily form underprivileged communities like mine were the most affected by this inequity of an indebted education. So I decided to shift the paradigm by engaging students, mentors, and communities in a worthwhile and engaging scholarship process as early as 10 years old; thereby availing them of the future burden of debt.

I began college with a Full Presidential Distinguished Scholarship award to attend Florida A&M University, however, starting my senior year of undergraduate study the accreditation board issued changes to the engineering course curriculum which would require an additional year of studies. This forced me to choose, find money fast, take on debt, or fail to graduate! I ended up taking out several student loans to pay the rest of the way for me to complete my course study. I then also wanted to pursue advanced degrees through which I was not always financially stable and supported, so again I requested additional student loans to help me get through.

After graduating several times and starting a family, the debt incurred from classes taken so long ago was still affecting my ability to contribute to my families welfare and relief. Fortunately, having mastered the art of interviewing gained from several prestigious internship awards, I was able to secure a role as a process engineer at Intel, a top semi-conductor technology company better stabilizing my life, career and future potential. However, I realized that I could have been much further along the financially stable course had I only invested more time in applying to scholarship and debt-free opportunities.

Going forward, I will inspire, motivate, and encourage more students to achieve debt-free graduation better preparing them for the world ahead. We absolutely must prepare them to excel in a world that we can’t even imagine, a world that lies far beyond the vision of what we can see instore for them today.
